In what turned out to be a very entertaining game, surprise title hopefuls Samut Prakan City visited relegation battling Chainat Hornbill. In a match that constantly switched momentum, it was Samut Prakan City who were able to get a 3-2 win and continue their momentum.
Samut Prakan City FC made the first impression on this game when they too the lead in the 29th minute.Winger Chayawat Srinawong put in a through ball for Brazilian forward Ibson Melo who was able to outmuscle Chainat defender Pornthep Chankai to the ball before taking the ball around keeper Kittipun Saensuk and sliding the ball into the empty net.
Samut Prakan City FC would continue to add pressure as they search for a second goal. Keeper Kittipun Saensuk did well to save a double effort from Baworn Tapla and Chayawat Srinawong before half time.
In the second half Chainat Hornbill came out the better team as they soon equalised. Ex-Sunderland midfielder Adam Reed received the ball in the box after a Chainat corner. As he ran with the ball his heel was clipped by Teeraphol Yoryoei which resulted in a penalty. On further viewing, I feel like the penalty was harsh as Adam Reed seemed to drop to the ground rather easily. Ricardo Santos buried the penalty into the bottom corner to equalise.
A few minutes later a comical turn of events gifted Chainat Hornbill the lead. As the ball was played in on the edge of the box to Eli Babalj, Samut Prakan midfielder Baworn Tapla stuck out a leg to intercept the ball. However he inadvertently deflected the ball off his own crossbar whilst the keeper was scrambling to get the ball. The ball the fortunately fell to Chatri Rattanawong who then just had to tap the ball in to give Chainat Hornbill the lead.
Samut Prakan had to regroup and won a penalty in the 85th minute. Somsak Musikaphan lost the ball on the edge of his own box to Ibson Melo who was then brought down by Jaturapat Sattham. The reaction of Jaturapat suggested that he did not feel that the penalty was just, and on second viewing he may have a case. Ibson Melo appeared to be on his was down before any contact was made. Regardless captain Peeradon Chamratsamee stepped up and cooly clotted home his penalty to even up the game.
It looked like this game was heading to a draw as we entered extra time. However in the 91st minute Samut Prakan City FC were able to snatch a late winner. A long ball was played up towards Ibson Melo, however Chainat Hornbill midfielder Ryutaro Karube’s half hearted clearance hit Ibson who was then through on goal. As keeper Kittipun Saensuk rushed out Ibson Melo chipped him to score the winner, in what will be one of the coolest goals you will see in the Thai League.
Samut Prakan City FC’s youthful side continue their good form which will see them continue to challenge for the league. In Brazilian Ibson Melo they have unearthed a hidden gem. Though Ibson Melo so far has not been as heralded as some of the other Brazilian forwards of the league, it is almost certain that some of the bigger clubs in the Thai League will be keeping an eye on him.
