Two of Thailand’s biggest clubs faced off when Muangthong United hosted Buriram United at the SCG Stadium. Buriram United are currently chasing their third successive league title while Muangthong United are playing for little more than pride after a disastrous first half of the season.
Muangthong United asserted their dominance early on and won a corner in the fifth minute after Brazilian forward Derley forced Buriram keeper Siwarak Tedsungnoen into a good save. From the proceeding corner was headed into the far post by South Korean defender Oh Ban-suk.
Five minutes later Muangthong United were able to double their lead after a series of defensive errors from Buriram. Firstly Sasalak Haiprakhon allowed Muangthong right-back Suphanan Bureerat to dribble past him into the box. As Suphanan entered the box Pansa Hemviboon tackle bounces off the Muangthong player and across the six yard box where it is met by Chitipat Tanklang. The Buriram defender’s poor touch allows the ball to fall for Derley who then converts his effort.
Buriram United were able to hold off further onslaught until half time. However Muangthong continued their relentless attack after the break and took the lead soon after the break. A Derley chipped ball into the box for Heberty, allowed his compatriot allowed him to beat a man before slotting home to make it 3-0.
Buriram United did eventually conjure up some form of attack as the game progressed with Supachai Jaided and Nacer Barazite having decent efforts. In the dying seconds of the game a Narubadin Weerawatnodom cross was converted by Suphanat Mueanta. However it would prove to little too late.
Watching the game, there was a feeling that the Muangthong United took great pride in scuppering Buriram’s title charge. The players seem to have played with extra vigour which helped them beat Buriram and allowed Chiangrai United to leap into first place.
Buriram United on the other-hand seemed to make to many defensive errors while not creating enough going forward. It may be a case of fatigue as many of their players were busy with international duty last week. Though they have a relatively large squad, there are only a few players that are trusted to play regularly and rotation is scarce.
