Buriram United suffered their fourth loss of the 2019 AFC Champions league losing 2-1 at home to Urawa Red Diamonds. The result effectively knocks the Thai champions out of the competition.
The Japanese club got off to a flying start by taking the lead in 3rd minute. Captain Yōsuke Kashiwagi found himself on the edge of the box with space between Buriram United’s centre backs Andrés Túñez and Chitipat Tanklang. When the midfielder received the ball he was allowed time to turn and shoot unchallenged to give Urawa Red Diamonds the lead.
Buriram responded well in the 13th minute and were able to equalise with their first attack. Narubadin Weerawatnodom and Pedro Júnior worked well together to win the ball back from Ryosuke Yamanaka on the half way line. The duo exchanged a number of well worked passes as they worked their way to the opposition box. Eventually Narubadin Weerawatnodom was able to play a ball into the six yard box for Pedro Júnior to tap in.
In the 23rd minute Urawa Red Diamonds were able to exert their dominance once again. Shinzo Koroki played a dangerous ball into the edge of the box. Andrés Túñez reacted first but rather comically fired his clearance off the chest of Sasalak Haiprakhon. The ball eventually fell to Yuki Muto who fired home the winner.
Buriram United heads out of what has been a lacklustre 2019 AFC Champions League campaign for them. Their defensive frailties have cost them dearly as they have conceded far too many goals especially through lapses in concentration. A notable cause of this has been the performance of the usually reliable Andrés Túñez. The club must decide moving forward whether to find a replacement for the ageing Venezuelan international or find a more suitable defensive partner who can have a calming influence to the defence for future Champions League campaigns.
