Thai international midfielder Charyl Chappuis has been unveiled as a new signing by Port FC ahead of the Thai League season.
The 28 year old has 20 appearances and 5 goals for the Thai national team rose to prominence during the 2014 Suzuki Cup where Chappuis scored three goals over two legs in the final against arch-rivals Malaysia to seal the crown. Since then Charyl Chappuis has been the poster boy of Thai football.
Charyl Chappuis was released by Muangthong United at the end of last season, with reports the club was scrabbling to reduce the wage bill ahead of the upcoming season. This meant that many of the top earners such as Heberty, Adisak Kraisorn, Teerasil Dangda, and Chappuis were allowed to leave the club as they tried to balance the books.
After many weeks of being a free agent there were reports circulating around the Thai media that Charyl Chappuis had signed for Ratchaburi Mitr Phol after none of the bigger clubs tried to sign him. However Port FC appear to have snatched the deal at the last minute adding another high profile signing to their ranks as they aim to win their first Thai League title.
It will be interesting how Charyl Chappuis fits into the Port FC team as they already have a stacked squad. They already have a very talented midfield with the likes of Go Seul-ki, Tanaboon Kesarat, Siwakorn Jakkuprasat, Nattawut Sombatyotha and Sansern Limwattana already in the squad. Therefore it will be interesting to see if Chappuis can force his way into the the starting lineup ahead of the aforementioned players or if he will become a very expensive squad player.
