Muangthong United have added Brazilian striker Willian Popp to their squad ahead of the 2020 season.
The 25 year old joins from Brazilian Serie A side Ceará Sporting Club having only managed one league game for them. Prior to this at the start of the year Willian Popp was signed to Figueirense FC, where he had a much more successful time playing 17 games and scoring 6 goals.
Willian Popp comes in as a replacement for Brazilian playmaker Heberty who has joined Thai League rivals Port FC. With such an important player joining one of their main rivals, this was a very important transfer window for Muangthong United as they were under pressure to provide additions to their squad. The signing is great news for the club as coach Alexandre Gama has publicly expressed his desire to bring in more creative players ahead of the upcoming season, with Willian Popp seamingly fitting the bill. Willian Popp will now likely form a partnership with compatriot Derley, with fans hoping the partnership can gel early.
The transfer window got off to a bad start for Muangthong as many transfer target got away from them most notably Magno Cruz who made a U-turn and decided to move to Qatar instead. The only notable addition that the club were able to bring in prior to this was Thai midfielder Saharat Kanyaroj who joined the club from the now defunct PTT Rayong.
