Bangkok United hosted Nakhon Ratchasima FC in week 20 as they tried to keep up with current league leaders Buriram United in the Thai League. However they were unable to get the much needed 3 points as a resilient Nakhon Ratchasima FC held them to a 2-2 draw.
The first half saw very little created in terms of chances. Both sides mange to create half chances from set prices but there was little chance of them going in for the first goal.
The second half first into life as when Nakhon Ratchasima FC surprising took the lead in the 46th minute. The goal came about when Nakhon Ratchasima keeper Samuel Cunningham punted the ball down field which was met by Bangkok United defender Wanchai Jarunongkran. However, Wanchai headed the ball backwards and into the path of striker Bernard Henry who was through on goal. Henry then proceeded to round the keeper before putting his side into the lead.
Even more surprisingly, Nakhon Ratchasima FC were able to double their lead in the 56th minute. As a long ball was played in Leandro Assumpção was able to outmuscle defender Putthinan Wannasri allowing him to be through on goal. As he drew nearer to goal Putthinan Wannasri made a last ditch tackle and tripped Assumpção in the box from behind. Nakhon Ratchasima FC were awarded a penalty and Putthinan was lucky to only receive a yellow card. Bernard Henry took responsibility and converted the penalty.
Bangkok United finally started to rally back in the last 10 minutes of the game. They were able to pull a goal back in the 81st minute when a Bangkok United corner was not successfully dealt with. As the ball was bouncing in the box Pokklaw Anan was able to react quickest and finish.
The comeback was completed a few minutes later when Wisarut Imura clipped in a ball for Bangkok United. Chananan Pombuppha headed towards goal which was well saved by Cunningham, however Nelson Bonilla was there to bury in the equaliser and once again show why he is the league’s most inform striker.
Bangkok United will be disappointed that they dropped points on Buriram United, while Nakhon Ratchasima FC will be pleased that they gained a point away from home against one of the league’s top sides boosting their survival chances for the season.
