Buriram United vs PTT Rayong

Thai League Week 13: Buriram United Back On Form With PTT Rayong Win

Buriram United hosted PTT Rayong at the Chang Arena midweek and was able to pull off a comfortable 5-0 win.

Buriram United started off the game on the front foot, passing the ball quickly and ensuring they bombard the PTT Rayong goal with as many shots as possible. Buriram United should have scored in the 22nd minute, when Suppasek Kaikaew inexcusably lost the ball on the edge of the box. The ball fell to Hajime Hosogai, who then fired a powerful shot which was saved by Rayong goalkeeper Peerapong Ruenin. However the ball fell to Pedro Júnior, who was unable to keep his composure and fired his shot well over the goal.

The deadlock was broken in the 29th minute when the PTT Rayong defence once again made a poor clearance. Brazilian defender Victor Cardozo only managed to poke his clearance into the path of Buriram right back Narubadin Weerawatnodom. The Thai international dribbled into the box, and provided a low cross into the 6 yard box for Sasalak Haiprakhon to tap in.

PTT Rayong had their best chance to equalise in the 42nd minute. Anawin Jujeen dribbled into the box and drove a low cross across the 6 yard box. Rayong frontman Ariel Rodríguez reacted quickly to shoot but the effort was well blocked by defender Chitipat Tanklang. The ball then fell back to Ariel Rodríguez whose second effort was heading into the top corner but was kept out by a smart save from Siwarak Tedsungnoen.

Buriram United doubled their lead just seconds before halftime. Sixteen year old attacker Suphanat Mueanta and crossed tamely into the box. Keeper Peerapong Ruenin fumbled his save and the ball fell loose and was met by Pedro Júnior who reacted quickest to poke home.

In the 56th minute Buriram United scored again to make it 3-0. The goal came from a corner which was met initially by Supachai Jaided. The effort came off the bar but captain Andrés Túñez was able to head home the rebound.

A couple minutes later Buriram United were gifted a fourth goal through poor defending from Suttinan Phuk-hom. As the ball was being played over the top for Supachok Sarachat, Suttinan fluffed his header, letting it bounce off his head and into the path of Supachok. As the attacker was about to shoot Supachok once again made a hash of his defending and pulled down the attacker giving away a penalty. Andrés Túñez drilled home from the spot to make it 4-0.

In the 67th minute when Buiriam United got their fifth goal of the game, it seemed like the PTT Rayong players had downed tools and given up. Defender Abdulhafiz Bueraheng failed to track the run of Pedro Júnior, and as the Brazilian received the ball in the box was able to ride the challenges of Suttinan Phuk-hom and Chinnawat Wongchai before finding Suphanat Mueanta who slotted home.

With a performance like that it will be hard to see how PTT Rayong can avoid relegation from the Thai League. The club will have to find a way to shore up the leaky defence while also finding a way of putting Jay Emmanuel-Thomas on the field to get some use off him.

For Buriram United it appears that the club are hitting form at the right stage of the season. This weekend we will see if they can maintain momentum as they have a potential title showdown with current league leaders Port FC.
