Title chasing Chiangrai United faced off against Trat FC in a game that could have big implications for the outcome of the Thai League. As favourites Buriram United slipped up against Muangthong United, Chiangrai were able to capitalise and leapfrog them into first place with a 3-1 win.
In the 41st minute Chiangrai’s William Henrique freekick was headed clear by Lonsana Doumbouya. However the ball tricked to Phitiwat Sukjitthammakul on the edge of the box. The defensive midfilder then fired a thunderbolt of a shot into the top corner to give Chiangrai United the lead.
In the 72nd minute Trat FC equalized when Tatchanon Nakarawong clipped the ball into the box for Doumbouya who beat his marker to head the ball into the far post. Doumbouya, who is the league’s top scorer continues his goal scoring form for another game.
Just when it looked like Chiangrai United were gonna drop two points and lose the advantage in the race for the Thai League, they pop up in the 82nd minute with the winner. A William Henrique cross was met by Phitiwat Sukjitthammakul who forced a good save from the Trat keeper. However, Piyaphon Phanichakul reacted quickest and tapped in the rebound.
A couple of minutes later Chiangrai United put the icing on the cake scoring another goal. It all came about from a great cross by Peerapong Pichitchotirat who put it on a plate for Akarawin Sawasdee to head home.
Though Chiangrai United were not at their best, they have managed to come away with three crucial points after scoring two late goals. Trat FC made a game out of it but they were simply outfought. With four games left of the season, will it be Chiangrai’s season?
